Happy Mother's Day!!! I am currently sitting in a hotel room in Lethbridge, Alberta. Why might you ask? I'll tell you why. I am on tour! With my two best friends! One's name is Lisa, and that's my mom. Many of you might think "Wow, that's lame. You're on tour with your mom??" And that's okay. I happen to think my mom is great and really cool. I am thankful to have a mom like her. You should say thanks to your mother too, since it's Mother's Day today. You know what? Mother's day is every day!! Also, Holly is with us. You know, the famous T-Shirt Designer. We have been having a blast. We just went swimming at a pool. I can't remember the last time I went swimming. The water slide was great. Anyway, what I was going to say is that today's show at the Slice in Lethbridge was cancelled due to a broke refrigerator. Thanks to anyone who was actually going to come and check out the show. I guess we will all have to wait until next time. Tomorrow I am playing at the Bayshore Inn's Lounge in Waterton! It's officially Day 3 on tour, and I thought it would be fun to try and do an update every couple days. That's about all I have to say right now, so see you soon! Here's a little video.

So I think I was wrong. March went out like lion. We have had a couple super nice days though. The other day I even heard the first frogs of the season! First of all, I am going to post a review I got in the Uniter a couple weeks ago. Thanks to them for that!

KAYLA LUKY
Story of My Life
Independent

In a time of vulnerability, an artist is able to be open and honest in their work. It's this that attracts us. Winnipegger Kayla Luky's third album, Story of My Life, has achieved just that appeal. This is a live studio album that has been kept intact, without much editing. Sometimes a musicians first intentions are lost after so much effort to rid it of their blemishes. This album's flaws are what make it so beautiful. Luky blends her clever lyrics with her beautiful voice to create songs that feel honest and relatable: "It's this time of year that I still love you. Yes, it comes back to me in waves." The only instrument played is Luky's acoustic guitar. This keeps the album personal. Story of My Life is an intimate telling between Luky and her audience.

Next, I have a show going on THIS Friday at the Old Fire Hall!

I hope to see a bunch of you there! It would be greatly appreciated!!

Also, in addition to my CDs being available through CDbaby, this website, myself, live shows, Into the Music, the Winnipeg Folk Festival Store and Music Trader, my CDs are also available exclusively! (hehe) in Grandview at Unique Photo and Gifts.

Last but not least, there are always more shows being added to the calendar, so make sure to keep yourself updated with that! Recently, I was accepted to showcase in New Music West, a great festival in Vancouver! Therefore, I decided I may as well make my trip out West even more worthwhile and try to get together a bit of a tour! I am still trying to fill a couple dates and places, so if you'd like me to come to your town, let me know! And hopefully I can play there.

Oh yeah, and if you were listening to 730AM CKDM this past evening, Bruce Leperre did a bit of an interview with me to promote Friday's show. It should be aired again once or twice before the big day, so tune in and support your local radio station!

I hope you all enjoyed or are still enjoying your chocolates and such from Easter. Thanks for coming back to visit kaylaluky.com!

March 6

Thank you so, so much to everyone who came out for the Release this past weekend! I had a really great time, and I hope all of you did too. Thank you for being such a lovely audience, and thank you for buying CDs and merchandise!

Check out this week's edition of the Uptown! Jared Story so kindy did a review of my CD that is included in this issue. You can check it out on their website by clicking here, or check out below.

I have a bit of a show tonight at Saffron's on Corydon, so come down for a drink or two if you have the time. I am always trying to add more dates to the calendar. So thanks again for coming back, and I hope to see you soon!

Oh yeah, and I'm going to say that March came in like a lion so it will go out like a lamb. As much as I like winter, I'm getting a liiiiittle bit sick of it.

I think Linus should have hauled Kayla Luky around instead of that blanket. The young singer/songwriter's gentle voice makes me feel safe and sound, and you'll feel similarly secure after spinning Story. Recorded live off the floor, the album's very raw, which fits, because Luky is basically bearing her soul here. While heart-on-sleeve songwriters can be annoying, Luky backs up the emotion with a definite lyrical knack. "I want to make a plan to not have one," she cleverly croons on I Wanna. Throw away your blanky and wrap yourself in this album.

Hi there! This Saturday is the big CD Release! I hope to see you all there. I have a couple things to update you guys on.

1. Make sure you are at Academy Food, Drinks & Music at 8 pm on Saturday March 1 for the big album par-tay!! See below for a poster, if you'd like. Big thanks to David Ellert who so kindly helped/did most of the postering for this show.

2. The new merchandise is officially sitting on the floor of my apartment! Check out the merchandise section to see the lovely new treats. Big thanks to the great people at Special T for doing such a terrific job and being such nice people. Also, to Holly Goossen for making such a great design and letting me use it!

3. There is another little feature of me in the Manitoban: Head or Tail you can check out! I've also posted it below. Thanks Nick for that opportunity.

4. I am currently trying to put a tour together for Mid-End of May, and possibly even the beginning of June. For any seasoned tour-ers out there, yes, I know, that doesn't give me a lot of time to plan, but I can sure try! So, that's where your help comes in! If you would like me to come to your town, email me up and my people can talk to your people! And by that, I mean I will talk to you, and hopefully we can work something fantastic out. Right now I am hoping to head out West, but that doesn't mean I won't or can't go to the East of the middle of Canada! So anyway, any coffee shops or restaurants, street corners or bars in your town you'd like me to come to, let's talk! Or if you would like to put on a house concert... even better! You can email me at kayla@kaylaluky.com I would really, really love to hear from you!

5. Keep checking out the Calendar section for show updates! Thanks to anyone and everyone who has been coming and listening thus far!

6. That's all for now I think. One more thank you... Thanks so much for coming back to visit, and I will leave you with this little interview.

Kayla Luky CD release party: March 1, 8 p.m. @ Academy Food, Drinks and Music in Osborne Village

What's your musical philosophy?

Music has the ability to do special, magical things inside of your chest.

What's your musical style?

Simple, honest and natural.

Who or what are your influences?

Everything and anything in the world around me. Whether it is people or places, family or friends, feelings or experiences - they are all influences. Just living and experiencing life.

What inspires you?

Whatever influences me, inspires me;how I interpret those things is what seems to come out in my music. Major themes that tend to surface include: nature, people, relationships and faith, among other things. Great music also inspires me, especially live.

Who's in the band right now?

I don't have a band. I fly solo.

Does mainstream music set the bar too high with its overly polished or produced sound?

No, not at all. I think it can taint some people's perception of good music. No amount of polishing and producing can hide good music for those who are willing to appreciate it.

Is lyrical censorship ever necessary?

For the most part, artists' lyrics are what they are and shouldn't be hushed up, but for me it depends on the audience. I would use some lyrical censorship out of respect. That's just how I was raised. I wouldn't throw F-bombs into care-home or elementary-school crowds, even if they have heard it all before.

Is there enough government funding for the arts?

I've never tried to get it and I'm not too familiar with it. For me, pursuing music is even more rewarding to do it on my own. However, I think funding could be more balanced for the little guys like me. It seems a lot of government funding goes to already well-established acts. A lot of the time it's going to the wrong people, I think.

February 15

Hey! Tomorrow I have a little bit of a show at the LO Pub & Gallery. My friend Greg from High Five Drive and I are putting on a singer/songwriter night there with a bunch of people. It should be a pretty good time, so come and check out some good people's good tunes.

The CD release is coming up quickly! I really hope to see you all there. OH YEAH! The whole point of this update was to let you know that two of my CDs, "kayla luky" (the second CD I released) and "Story of my Life" (the NEW CD!) are now available at a couple of retail outlets in Winnipeg, MB. They can be found at:

Into the Music 245 McDermot Avenue B (204) 287-8279
Music Trader 97 Osborne Street (204) 475-0077
The Winnipeg Folk Festival Store 203-211 Bannatyne Avenue (204) 231-0096

This information is also posted in the Merchandise section.

And, to leave you with something very special and dear to my heart, here is something I took, especially for you. It still brings a tear to my eye.

Yes that's right. I love the Spice Girls!!

March 1, 2008 will be the official CD Release "Part-tay" for Kayla's new album. Check out the poster below! Pass it to your friends, come with it to your friends! It should be a great time. Also, make sure you check the calendar for new dates added. For instance, this Sunday Kayla will be featured on Made in Manitoba. Hopefully she doesn't sound too dumb, because she sure was nervous! Thanks to anyone who may have listened to the interview last night on 92.9 KICK FM.

"Story of my Life" also got a review in this past Saturday's Winnipeg Free Press! Check out the story on whatsonwinnipeg.com or see below.

January 19th, 2008

KAYLA LUKY / Story of My Life (Independent)

Originally from a rural area northwest of Dauphin, young Winnipeg-based folk-rock singer-songwriter Kayla Luky, above, recorded her third album live and solo in the studio.

The arrangements are sparse - primarily vocal and guitar along with some harmonica (think Avril Lavigne channeling Neil Young) - but occasionally Luky uses technology to accompany herself a la KT Tunstall. Luky is no Ani Difranco on the six strings but she is still quite capable of keeping her playing interesting. Lyrically, the aptly titled Story of My Life is very confessional in nature. There are times when she would benefit from some additional instrumentation or stronger production, but all things considered, Story is pretty impressive.

Luky may wear her heart on her sleeve but she adorns it quite nicely with a pretty voice that seems to flow naturally from deep within her soul. Not yet 20 years old, Luky is already one to watch.

Hey guys. Check out this CD Review in the Manitoban. Thank you Jacqueline Hogue!

Kayla Luky
Story of my Life
Independent / 2007
♥♥♥♥

The content of Kayla Luky's third full-length album, Story of my Life, is exactly what one expects if one is so bold as to judge the album by its cover. The pressed flowers and leaves on the cover are like Luky's flowery songs: simple and organically beautiful. Both Luky's hairstyle and occasional intertwining of her mid-range head voice conjure up imagery of Joni Mitchell. The whole concept of the album seems enchantingly based on something out of the '60s . . . or Wolseley.

Locally recorded, Story of my Life is honest in that it is neither clean nor overproduced. You'd hear her sliding fingers changing chords in a coffeehouse and such is captured here as a charming nuance. This album is put together well; the mellow and slower songs are spaced appropriately between more lively and varied tracks. Luky's uncomplicated riffs are fitting for this acoustic folk album. Her raw, organic voice is full of character and works well for this sweet, simple, and soulful effort.

Oh yeah, and if you signed up to the mailing list, it probably didn't work. That issue should be ironed out soon. Sorry about that.

Also, word on the street is that you should keep your eyes out for this Saturday's Winnipeg Free Press.

Happy New Year! As you can see, kaylaluky.com is going through some changes. Please bear with the certain technical issues for now. They won't last long. Even if the new face lift doesn't stick around for too long, that just means you will have another new and exciting website for your viewing pleasure!

We've received word that Kayla Luky's new album "Story of my Life" is officially sitting on her bachelor apartment floor! In the next coming days there will be loads (we're talking megabites, MAN) of new information on where to catch Kayla Luky live, where to purchase the new (and old) CDs, a possible CD release party to celebrate her new work and MORE!

For now, check around the website for anything new you may not have seen or heard before. There is a definite theme between this website and her new album cover (see below). Why? Well, because Kayla did it herself! This whole website was literally homemade, from the paper, to the flowers and the writing. Who wants new fangled virtual websites anyway? I suggest you go outside and eat a snowflake and tell a tree a secret. Infact go do that right now instead of reading this.

Until next time, phone your grandmother and tell her that you love her.

Kayla Luky's THIRD release... 14 NEW tracks, all done live in the studio!

If you simply cannot wait for more information about online or retail stores where Kayla Luky's latest release will be available, don't hesitate to contact her directly to purchase a copy of the new album!
